Description

Treasures of the Northern Rhone
Friday, May 24th 6-8pm.

Hosted by special guest winemaker Markus Niggli of Markus Wine Co.

It's not difficult to see why vine-growing is relatively uncommon on the steep, wooded banks of the Rhone south of Lyons. These vineyards, probably the oldest in France, have had to be etched into the mountainside on narrow terraces and at dizzying gradients. Some are so steep that pulley systems have to be used for grapes. Syrah is the undisputed king, crafting intense, age-worthy reds like those from Hermitage, with their concentrated dark fruit and robust structure. Cote-Rotie offers a touch of elegance, showcasing a balance of power and finesse with hints of black pepper and violets. As well as the rustic charm of Cornas, where Syrah takes on a bolder, earthier character. Nestled amidst the reds lies Viognier. In Condrieu, it shines with richness and aromatic intensity, boasting notes of apricot, honeysuckle, and a touch of minerality. And Hermitage Blanc, the hidden gem of Northern Rhone, is a revelation. Crafted from Marsanne with a touch of Rousanne, this is a full-bodied and expressive wine. Rich aromas of honeysuckle, apricot and white peach are beautifully balanced by a vibrant acidity.
We'll taste examples of all these wines.
