“You can smell the grapes from 100 yards away," says Lukas van Loggerenberg of this unique Polkadraai Hills Syrah, which comes from a vineyard at a comparatively elevated 300 metres. With aromas of pine, lavender and black pepper, you can see what he means. The palate is meaty yet fresh, with granitic bite and grip, intense tannins and wonderful palate length. A stunning release.”

“This was decanted so presumably it was a bit reduced. Pretty deep crimson. Seductively silky ripe fruit that I fear I may not immediately identify as Syrah if I were served this wine blind – it seems a tad riper than northern Rhône Syrah, but there’s nothing wrong with that of course. Sweet start before some tobacco leaf and a convincingly dry finish. Definitely a food wine and definitely a wine with ambition. A light hint of liquorice and the glamour of well-grown Syrah on the mid-palate. Quite long.” 17/20 points.
