Description
Jancis Robinson
"Full bottle 1,399 g. Certified organic (Ecocert), biodynamic farming and winemaking. 100% Bastard Negre from Catalunya. Vines planted in 1974, from a single 0.63-ha vineyard called Les Terrasses del Serral – calcareous soils, shallow clay loam. Hand-picked. Spontaneous fermentation in open barrel with six weeks of maceration. No additions, no intervention, no added sulphites, unfined, unfiltered. Tiny production of less than 600 bottles.
Aromas of iris flowers, farmyard. Pure, inky and trembling with the near-spill of dark fruit. The tannins are spice-laden and velvet and drumming a quiet heartbeat. The fruit is black cherry, mulberry, liquorice and oboes. It's insistent, pressing full-lipped kisses into your tongue and smearing purple juice into every corner of the palate. Unique, complete, and a bit of a wild beauty. Bohemian soul. 17.5/20 points. (TC)"
Vinous Reverie Notes
Mas del Serral is Raventos’ personal project, an experiment with making the purest wines possible. The maximum attention is focused on the vineyards, working meticulously throughout the whole agricultural year, such as green pruning, winter pruning, making soldiers … so that the air circulates among the grapes minimizing the onset of diseases. Bastard Negre, a native red grape that the family cares about regenerating. The vineyard is worked according to the biodynamic principles following the lunar calendar for the work on the vines. No sulfites are used. A most unusual, red wine fermented in open barrels. Only 600 bottles made.
