Description

Boekenhoutskloof, Semillon Franschhoek 2020
Jancis Robinson
"The 24th vintage. 98% Sémillon from these old vines (20% 1932, 55% 1936, 23% 1942). In this vintage, they added 2% early-picked Muscat of Alexandria (1902) rather than the Sauvignon Blanc added in earlier vintages. Whole-bunch pressed and spontaneously fermented in barriques and concrete eggs. Matured at low temperatures for 14 months, 70% in new French oak and 30% in concrete eggs. The Muscat fermented in clay amphora. TA 5.4 g/l, pH 3.41, RS 2 g/l. Gottfried Mocke's first vintage was 2016 and this vintage shows some of the changes in the cellar, with SO2 added at an earlier stage and less new oak.
Very pale. Completely different from the 2010 and the 2009. Much more obvious flintiness and a touch of struck match (more deliberate sulphides). Herbal, grapefruit, with the fine waxy texture of Sémillon even with all this freshness. It's the winemaking that marks the aroma at the moment. Super-smoky on the palate. Full and textured in the mouth, great length. Mouth-watering, powerful, elegant. Long and still embryonic. 18/20 points. (JH)"

Pedro Parra, Monk Cinsault Itata 2021
95 points Wine Advocate
“The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Monk comes from a rented vineyard in Guarilihue-Tiajacura on silt and iron soils and was named after jazz musician Thelonius Monk, who Pedro Parra describes as "complex and innovative." It fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in and oak vat for 11 months. The wine comes from red, tight soils, with lots of iron and small particles of quartz. It always has a deeper voice, and it's subtle and keeping the style of the Imaginador, quite Comando G (Las Umbrías, mentioned Parra), fine-boned with grainy tannins and good grip. It's floral and elegant, with some ethereal fragility. 1,712 bottles were filled in February 2022”

Sadie Family, Treinspoor Swartland 2021
96 points Vinous
"The 2021 Treinspoor is Sadie's Tinta Barocca that the man himself likens to Nebbiolo, also opining that it is a wine that needs considerable ageing. These vines were planted in 1974, and the blend includes 40% whole clusters. It has a complex, succinctly defined bouquet with melted tar and graphite infused dark red berry fruit, a hint of Lapsant Souchong. The palate is medium-bodied with plant tannins, perfectly-tuned acidity, almost Burgundian in texture yet with more pepperiness towards the finish. So elegant and harmonious-this is stunning from every angle you look at it."
