Description

95 points Wine & Spirits
"Most vineyards have a structure of topsoil, subsoil and bedrock. Due to its age and steepness, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr does not have any topsoil. The vines grow in the shimmer of shiny, weathered, blue Devonian slate. The soil has exceptional drainage and forces vines to dig deep, where they find sustenance for their fruit to make a nearly perfect wine for the Loosen family. This concentrated Spätlese hits the confluence of citrus pulp, tarragon and the kind of vibrant acidity that will set your tongue in motion. This is a wine for the cellar, or, if you are impatient, there’s plenty here to reward your opening the bottle now."

94 points James Suckling
"Brimming with stone fruits with delicate floral honey and caramelized pear aromas. Ripe and generous, but with a lively acidity that keeps this moving briskly over the palate. Long finish in which creamy and crisp elements are beautifully balanced. Drink or hold."

Vinous Reverie Notes
The vineyard name, Wehlener Sonnenuhr translates to 'The sundial of Wehlen' and is famous throughout the Mosel for its steepness as well as the rocky, blue Devonian slate soils. The wines that hail from this vineyard consistently show racy minerality and elegant structure. The vines age averages around 70 years on their own original rootstocks, and are farmed sustainably. This bottling has more richness and body than Kabinett because the grapes are allowed to ripen for an extra week or more. The extra hang time on the vine allows for greater development of flavor and aroma. After harvest cool fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and traditional Fuder barrels; half fermented with natural yeasts, half with cultured yeasts the entire process is stopped by chilling. Tasting Notes: Aromatically the wine rushes forward with scents of ripe melon, juicy orchard fruits, and a hint of smoke. The palate is full of ripe tropical fruits laced with lush, but not heavy sweetness, wet stone and a finish of salty minerality.
