"The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (400 cases produced) will be the last vintage of this cuvee. A fabulous wine fashioned from 50-100-year old vines (80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre), its dense purple color is accompanied by gorgeous aromas of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, minerals, and kirsch. As it sits in the glass, notions of pepper and spice also emerge from this unevolved, backward Chateauneuf. It has high levels of extract and richness as well as formidable tannin."

"Pumping along nicely, this features dense, sappy kirsch, blackberry cobbler and fig reduction notes all powered by long graphite tannins and waves of toasted spice and anise flavors on the finish. Vibrant, youthful and long, this stands apart from the pack."

"60% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault, 10% Counoise, 5% other varieties. Blended from 80% Les Hauts-Lieux and 20% Les Trois Sources.
Wonderful forest-floor aroma with overripe strawberry and excellent cigar-smoke aroma. Still-firm tannins, with chewiness that fades gradually alongside the still-youthful fruit intensity. 17.5/20 points. (RH)"
