Truly resonates the warm summer soils of the south, but with a cool-breeze core. Elegant, complex and long with finely ground, firm tannins adding depth and with delicious, supple acidity. Not something for those looking for fruit flavours. This speaks of its ancient roots. A tonic more than a wine. 17.5/20 points. (WS).”
Vinous Reverie Notes
Cataldo Calabretta represents the fourth generation of a family of winemakers. Choosing to stay home and trying to produce a high-quality wine means to renew and honor both my family's and the land's tradition. After studying Enology and Viticulture at the Faculty of Agriculture of Milan, Cataldo worked for a few years in a number of Italian wineries. Then, in 2008, he decided to refurbish the old family cellar and bottle their wine for the first time. For over 10 years, the estate is run according to the principles of organic farming, an ethical choice, which year after year is paying off: They have renewed the vineyards, continuing to cultivate the native grape variety Gaglioppo on hilly land located in the heart of the historic production zone of Ciro. Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red. Nose shows an aromatic spectrum complex, ripe red fruits on spice grounds, vanilla and balsamic notes. Of great structure, in the mouth it is soft, warm and well balanced. Food Pairings: Stews, grilled meats, sausages and roasted lamb.
