Description
96 points James Suckling
"Astonishingly fresh nose of fresh sage and dill. So sleek and pristine, with enormous Amalfi-lemon intensity. Staggeringly long and focused finish. This will surely age for decades. From a super-steep vineyard site that lies up to 570 meters above sea level."
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Dense, aromatic and ripe Riesling fruit with plenty of clarity and mineral substance—this is the prelude to the sustainably produced 2021 Riesling Ried Dr. Wunsch. Gerhard Wohlmuth says this is "the best Dr. Wunsch we have ever had: pure and juicy, with low pH, almost only tartaric acid and perfectly brought to the cellar." On the palate, this 2021 is dense, juicy and salty, showing crystalline acidity as well as enormous power and length with corresponding tannin structure, yet also elegance and finesse. Still, this is a powerful Riesling overall that needs a couple of years in the bottle. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2022."
Vinous Reverie Notes
Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803! The Reid Dr. Wunsch terroir has red quartzite slate soils and the vineyard has 100% steep gradient. The altitude is 500-550m. Because of this location, the grapes are selected and picked by hand. They are given a short maceration time, with gentle and slow whole-grape pressing. They undergo spontaneous fermentation in old wooden casks. After fermentation the wine is aged on yeast for 10 months. Tasting Notes: Concentrated aromas of mandarin, pineapple, apricot and lime zest, complex minerality.
