96 points Vinous
"The 2018 Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard Block 5 is a total knockout. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and sage give the 2018 so many shades of nuance. A dark, somber expression of Pinot comes through loud and clear. Wild, deep, exotic, the 2018 is truly spectacular. All it needs is more time in bottle."
Vinous Reverie Notes
Block 5 in Dierberg vineyard tends to have a more reddish color and more clay on top of gravel, helping to provide a touch more structure and depth to the finished project. The vines were planted in the mid-90s in the Santa Maria Valley. The grapes are harvested before they are destemmed into open-top fermenters. Native yeast fermentation starts after about five days before the juice is gently extracted by using punch down and pump-overs. The wine is pressed and then settled before going into oak barrels, a third of which is new. The wine is aged on its lees between 12 to 14 months, before being racked and blended, then transferred back into barrel for another 3-4 months. Tasting Notes: Aromatically the wine is finessed with notes of tart cranberries and pomegranates, with a hint of oranges. On the palate, the wine is balanced between savory and red fruit notes, with a bright acidic structure and juicy finish.
