"The 2018 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard is a rich, potent wine endowed with real breadth and intensity. The natural weight of this Sonoma Valley site comes through loud and clear. This is a decidedly big, brawny Zinfandel that will appeal most to readers who like bold, larger-scaled wines."
"85% Zinfandel, 15% mixed black varieties (Carignan and Mataro with a bit of Syrah and Petite Sirah, Castets etc). Originally plated by James Hooker. Hit phylloxera and was sold to Randolph Hearst’s father. He was a good friend to E W Hilgard (Professor of Agriculture at the University of California in the late 19th century) and got early rootstock. The resulting wine was said to be as good as the finest wines of Europe. Dry farmed, Tuscan and Red Hill soils of cobbly loam. Average age of vines is 80 years but some date back to 1888 but there were waves of replanting – actually interplanting – of 28 different varieties.
Pretty rich and ripe on the nose. Very fine tannins. Polished texture and really zesty. Long and very elegant. Hardly any obvious alcohol. Minerally finish. Very long indeed. 17.5/20 points."
Vinous Reverie Notes
Joel Peterson started Ravenswood in 1976 to focus on his love of Zinfandel. Once & Future is a continuation of Joel's early work at Ravenswood as he's returned to many of the original vineyards he used, Oakley, Sangiacomo, and Teldeschi, while also incorporating the famed Bedrock vineyard owned with his son Morgan Twain-Peterson.
