Description
Jancis Robinson
"Impenetrable, dark crimson. Deep, sensual blackberry-fruit nose with an undertow of liquorice. Cool blackberry fruit. Supple with elegant, medium-weight palate and fine, sandy tannins. Wonderful balance and freshness – quite a feat for the hottest vintage on record. 17/20 points. (WS)"
Vinous Reverie Notes
Ibbola is the valley with the most extreme characteristics. Here the sandstone is very pure, with little marl, the altitudes are highest (500 meters above sea level) and the surrounding woods play the most significant role in determining the quality of the grapes. The Ibbola valley is the narrowest of the three and its grapes mature later than in the others, often in late October. The Sangiovese here is defined by its elegance and austerity, with a salty, incisive palate driven by fine tannins. The nose is floral with an earthy quality that foretells of the wine’s minerality. The finale, with its notes of citrus, is typical of the Sangiovese in this valley.
