"Poboleda is in the northeast of the appellation, in the Siurana Valley at the foot of the Montsant Mountains, which provides a cooler microclimate with more rain, a longer cycle and later ripening than the southern part of Priorat. 2014 was a mild year complicated by rains in September, which required sorting grapes. This resulted in a 2014 1902 Centenary Carignan with half a point less alcohol than the cool 2013. This 2014 feels exactly like something in between the 2013 and 2015 vintages—with the freshness and tension of 2013 and the power and ripeness closer to 2015. It has a good compromise between power and elegance; it's concentrated but with tension and freshness, lots of tannins but not astringent. A very concentrated but harmonious Cariñena, one of the best in Priorat. Only 864 bottles were filled unfined and unfiltered in April 2016 after 16 months in new French oak barrels."

"The wine is fermented all in tank and aged in new French oak. Deep purple/opaque colored and offering awesome notes of blueberries, liquid violets, plums, mint, and graphite, this beauty has bright, juicy acidity, gorgeous fruit, fine tannin and a great, great finish. I finished my note on this with “Awesome Wine!”."
"100% Carinyena (Carignan) on llicorella soils. 1902 refers to the year of planting, 115-year-old vines are located in the characteristic ‘costers’ of Priorat, elevation ranges between 350 m and 500 m. Organic and very low yields of 200 grams/vine. Hand-picked grapes were selected in the vineyard prior to a second selection on a double sorting table. 100% destemmed, fermentation is carried out in stainless-steel tanks of 1,500–2,000 kg. Maceration lasts 24 days approximately, using a submerged cap system in order to minimise the risk of oxidation and achieve a smoother extraction. Aged in fine-grain new French oak barrels for 14–16 months. No fining, unfiltered. Very limited production to 864 bottles. Tasted blind.
Extremely deep on the aromatics, showing never-ending fruit, spice and juicy wild berries. The oak sensation is creamy, almost sweet. What a motivating nose! Delicious and elegant, with weight and class accompanied by an electrifying acidity! Smooth, soft and velvety tannins, a really mouth-coating wine. Outstanding Priorat that is over the top! 19.5/20 points. (FC)"

"New vintage of one of the Priorat great wines, elaborated with Cariñena planted in 1902. Limited and exclusive production of 880 bottles.
The bottle is partially decanted and the rest is left to compare its evolution.
Riedel Syrah glass is used.
Bright crimson red color, medium depth and intens dark violet trim, slightly tinted fine tear that flows quickly throughout the glass.
In the nose initially it shows a bit closed and it is necessary to be patient. It is a slowly opening wine and it takes up to 2 hours to start showing its initial records. Then forest fruit aromas appear with red currants, blueberries, fleshy and ripe blackberries, fine and elegant roasted aromas from the French barrel that delight us with a subtle perfume of vanilla pod, cinnamon powder, and the soft minerality that it is characterized by suddenly appears. The licorella is gaining ground as the wine is opening but we still need to be patient. Mountain herbs with fresh balsamic aromas, licorice root and fresh eucalyptus gradually lighten its remarkable aromatic structure. It is worth noting that after a decanting of 4-5 hours the wine shows an impressive balance of aromas and a deep nature of ripe fruit, fresh violets, wet slate, grain spices and nutmeg, ... everything in its purest state.
In the mouth it has an excellent entrance with a sweet astringency, it shows powerful, structured and compact; a whole block that is slowly progressing with a remarkable breadth and volume, tasty and fleshy black fruit with black plums, blackcurrants and fleshy blackberries, firm tannins, although at times they are a bit unripe, the barrel roasted aromas are elegant although they still have to be integrated into the whole, elegant and round, balanced and very pleasant, silky texture that is maintained throughout the route and helps to accommodate its structure and vigorosity, long persistence. Very long final, ripe fruit aftertaste and mineral retronasal of wet licorella and soft spicy sensations.
Pure essence of the Priorat. A colossus!"

1902 is made from the oldest vines of Carinyena planted in the Doix vineyard in, unsurprisingly, 1902. The Doix vineyard, which is also the source for the Costers del Vinyes Velles cuvée, is a steep slope ranging in elevation from 350m to 450m above sea level. These ancient vines, naturally low-yielding, produce concentrated but remarkably balanced grapes. From its inception Mas Doix has prized these old vines of Carinyena and never considered them inferior to Garnatxa or any of the non-indigenous varieties that were in fashion in the early 1990s. With a propensity for producing wines with less flesh and a pleasantly somber and dark ferocity, Carinyena primarily serves as a check against the over exuberance of Garnatxa in the wines of the Priorat. It is just now getting the attention it deserves and Mas Doix is one of the pioneers, along with Terroir al Limit for championing this variety. Hand harvested, carefully sorted and destemmed, 1902 is fermented in tank with a long maceration followed by aging in new French oak barrels.
