"The 2018 Maggiorina is fresh, vibrant and perfumed. Bright red cherry fruit and a whole range of floral and savory notes give the wine its striking aromatic presence. Medium in body and vibrant, the 2018 has a ton of energy as well as personality, with a certain wildness that is quite appealing. Christophe Künzli, a Swiss importer with an enviable roster of producers, fell in love with the area in the 1990s. Künzli bought a small 0.5 hectare vineyard from Antonio Cerri, one of historic figures in Boca, and founded Le Piane, where he now produces some of the most compelling wines in the region. The Le Piane Boca is one of the great wines of Italy."
"Maggiorina is an ancient Piemontese training system, it is like a cross between a very low pergola and a bush vine.
Fascinating chalky red fruit with a hint of white pepper. Supple red fruit on the palate with hints of violets and notes of raspberry and bags of chalky tannins. 17/20 points. (WS)"
Vinous Reverie Notes
The name “Maggiorina” refers to an idiosyncratic growing method traditionally used in the area around the area around Maggiora and Boca and refined by nineteenth-century architect (and Piedmontese native) Alessandro Antonelli. Three vines are planted together and developed upwards toward the four cardinal points of the compass. When winemaker Christophe Künzli first came to know the vineyards of Boca in 1988, he carefully learned the traditional growing practices from Antonio Cerri, one of the last local wine-growers of the region. Produced from grapes grown in old 'Maggiorina' vineyards (25 different small fields). These fields are planted with a mix of 12 different varieties of grapes (mostly Nebbiolo and Croatina but even some white and aromatic grapes) to give a real field blend. They changed to Vino da Tavola when the law changed to allow the vintage on the label. Colline Novarese allows only four varieties and no white so they were illegal. Most of the vines are over a century old, and all are cared for and harvested by hand. This unique field blend combines fine tannins with wild blueberry, mulberry, and brambly flavors and a hint of crushed, stemmy herbs. Sustainably grown. Vegan.
