90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"This is a terrific entry-level red from the talented folks at I Custodi. The 2017 Etna Rosso Pistus shows a dark color and a mid-weight style with dark cherry and blackberry. Those primary aromas are followed by the usual succession of oak spice and volcanic ash. Here, however, the delivery of those aromas is particularly bright and balanced. There's nothing too complicated in this wine, but it hits all the necessary pleasure points and would surely make a great companion to porcini mushroom risotto. The blend is 80-20 Nerellos Mascalese and Cappuccio. Some 32,000 bottles were made."
Vinous Reverie Notes
Pistus, “pressed”, the true symbol of the fatigue of the Etnean Man. The same wine that the farmers of the Muntagna once produced for their daily consumption, and of these men bears the mark: abrupt, wild, angular, spontaneous. Varietals: Nerello Mascalese (80%) and Nerello Cappuccio (20%). Altitude: 700 m (2300 ft.) above sea level. Terrain: Sandy, volcanic, very rich in minerals, with subacid reaction. Vinification: The grapes are harvest and selected, brought to the winery in shallow crates, where the whole clusters are soft-crushed. Maceration for about a week in steel vats. Maturation in the same vats for about 9 months. Refining after bottling for at least 2 months. Tasting Notes: Red with bright ruby glares. Fresh fruit, floral. Fruity, harmonic, pleasant tannins, good acid persistence.
