93 points Vinous
"Dark ruby. Heady, spice-accented raspberry and cherry scents are complicated by musky garrigue, floral and mineral nuances. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy, impressively concentrated red and dark berry and lavender pastille flavors and suggestions of cola and licorice. Firms up slowly on the finish, which is framed by slow-building tannins and leaves suave floral and red fruit liqueur notes behind."
"Crushed berries, tinned strawberry and garrigue nose. Plenty of liquorice and soft juicy fruit. Powerful but drinking well with bright fruit and a touch of black pepper beneath the juicy core. Rounded supple tannins – just starting to drink. 17/20 points. (AC)"
Vinous Reverie Notes
The Meffres have been vignerons at Gigondas since the 17th Century and have played a key role in the success of the appellation. Roger Meffre was president of the Syndicat des Vignerons de Gigondas and was instrumental in winning Appellation status for Gigondas in 1971 and changing the law regarding the wine's Grenache content. The 33 hectare Domaine Saint Gayan is one of the commune's finest estates. Made from a traditional blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre that is vinified in cement vats prior to blending and bottling. It is a powerful, brooding, uncompromising Rhône wine with great intensity and depth of flavor.
