"Crisp, dry and savory, this fantastic white grown on the slopes of the tallest volcano in the Mediterranean hits all the right buttons. It opens with delicate scents recalling pressed Spanish broom, graphite, wild herbs and stone fruit. Taking up where the nose left off, the linear, elegant palate features ripe yellow pear, wild fennel, lemon drop candy and saline set against bright acidity that gives it a juicy, tangy finish. Drink now, or hold until 2025 for even more complexity."
Vinous Reverie Notes
Barone di Villagrande is the oldest winery in Sicily dating back to 1727. The cellar still used today was built in 1850. Marco Villagrande currently runs the estate. Still working by hand as they have for generations. The winery and vineyards are situated on slopes above Milo, which, along with other key “east side” villages like Zafferana Etnea, is within the Valle del Bove-a large, concave valley thought to have been formed by the collapse of an ancient crater-lake. Along with the black volcanic lava that is the key component of Etnean soil, vineyards in the eastern region also contain higher percentages of sand, especially in comparison to the heavier, more rocky soils of the northern sector.
